Turnip Cultivation Method Using Seeds:
Planting Time
If you intend to grow a summer crop, sow the turnip seeds earlier in the season. However, if your goal is to harvest turnips for winter storage, it is recommended to plant them in late summer so that the crop can be harvested before the first frost.
Growing Conditions
Turnips generally require a location with full sunlight but can tolerate partial shade, especially if you plan to harvest the plant for its greens.
Soil Preparation and Seedbed Establishment
Preparing the soil for turnip cultivation is very simple. Just loosen and turn the soil using a rake and shovel to get it ready for planting. After preparation and ensuring that the soil is not overly wet, scatter the turnip seeds evenly and gently rake them into the soil.
Approximately 3 to 4 kilograms of Iranian turnip seeds are needed per hectare. The seeds should be sown at a depth of about 1 centimeter. Immediately after planting, water the area to speed up germination.
Thinning and Maintenance
Once the turnip seedlings start growing, thin them to maintain a distance of about 10 centimeters between each plant. This means removing excess plants to provide enough space for the remaining ones to develop strong roots.
During the growing season, water the plants every ten days. This schedule allows you to have fresh turnips ready for harvest approximately every two weeks.
Harvesting
Finally, when the turnip bulbs reach the desired size, they can be harvested.
